Sensors and datachannels

The words sensor and datachannel can to some extent be used somewhat interchangably, and can refer to the same concept.

One key distinction however is that a datachannel is a concept broader than a sensor as a datachannel can:

  • originate from the aggregation of feeds from multiple sensors;
  • identify a connection carrying a command, an alarm, a configuration setting;
  • identify manually annotated data;

The important property of a datachannel is that it has a Local ID associated with it, which is built from one of the available naming rules for ISO 19848, such as dnv-v2.

Mapping is the process of assigning a datachannel to a Local ID, and a mapping is an instance of such an assignment. A labeler is an individual performing the mapping.
